Switching IT Support Provider
Thinking of Changing Your IT Support Provider?
Many businesses stay with an underperforming provider longer than they should — worried about losing access to systems, passwords, Microsoft 365, licences, domains or documentation, or simply concerned that changing will cause disruption.
J700 can review your existing environment and help manage a structured transition. We will be straightforward with you about what it involves before you commit to anything.
Common concerns — and the honest answers
Will we lose access to our systems?
We review access and continuity risks early, then agree practical steps for each platform and the people responsible for it.
What about our Microsoft 365 and email?
Microsoft 365 tenancy and data arrangements depend on how your accounts are set up. We review ownership, access and licensing as part of the transition plan.
What if they won't hand anything over?
We can discuss the information available, the relevant account owners and the options for addressing gaps in the handover.
Will it disrupt day-to-day business?
Properly planned transitions minimise disruption. We are transparent about where brief service windows may be needed.

The Transition Process
How a structured IT provider transition works
Discovery
We start with an honest conversation. We want to understand your business, what your current provider is doing well and where things are falling short, and what you need from a new relationship.
Review
Where information is available, we review your current environment — systems, licences, Microsoft 365 tenancy, domains, security posture, backups, connectivity and any existing documentation.
Transition Plan
We create a structured handover plan that identifies what needs to transfer, in what order, and what risks need to be managed. This plan is agreed with you before any work begins.
Access and Documentation
We identify the administrator credentials, supplier account details and system documentation needed for the agreed scope. Where information is missing or the handover is difficult, we explain the available options and any constraints.
Onboarding
J700's management tools, security systems and monitoring are deployed across your environment in line with the agreed plan. We work to minimise impact on day-to-day operations.
Validation
Once onboarding is complete we review the agreed systems, services, access and documentation under J700's management. We record any gaps and agree next steps with you.
Ongoing Managed Service
You move into your agreed managed IT service with J700. The support, monitoring, security management and strategic guidance included in that service are introduced according to the agreed plan.

Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about switching IT support provider
Honest answers to the questions we are most commonly asked by businesses considering a change.
Is it difficult to change IT support provider?
A structured transition — with clear documentation, agreed timelines and an incoming provider who understands the environment — can make the change more manageable. The approach depends on the systems involved, the available information and cooperation during handover.
Will changing IT provider cause downtime?
A well-managed transition aims to keep disruption to a minimum, though some brief service windows may be required for certain changes. We plan transitions carefully to avoid impact during business-critical periods and are transparent about any windows where brief interruption is unavoidable.
What happens to our passwords and administrator access?
A key part of our transition process is identifying the administrator credentials for systems, Microsoft 365, domains and third-party services. Where passwords are missing, we can help identify the relevant account owners and discuss recovery or reset options where the platform permits.
What if our current provider will not cooperate?
If the handover is difficult, we review the accounts, contracts and information available and explain the options. Recovery routes vary by platform and account ownership, so we will be clear about what can and cannot be established in your specific situation.
What happens to Microsoft 365 when we switch?
We review how your Microsoft 365 tenancy, data, email and licences are configured and who controls them. Where appropriate, J700 can act as your Microsoft partner, manage licences and ongoing configuration, and address security or governance gaps identified during the review.
What happens to our domains and DNS?
We review your domain registration and DNS arrangements. Where the relevant credentials and permissions are available, J700 can help manage a transfer or change of DNS provider. We document relevant DNS records before agreed changes.
What happens to our backups?
Where your current provider holds backup data, we work to either transfer it or establish a clean baseline under J700's backup management. Where legacy backup data cannot be retrieved, we document this clearly and agree the approach with you before proceeding.
What about licences and subscriptions?
We identify all relevant licences and subscriptions during the review phase. Where licences can be transferred or moved to J700's procurement, we manage that process. Where third-party licences are directly in your name, we guide you through the handover.
Can you take over servers, networks and devices?
J700 may be able to manage servers, network infrastructure, firewalls, Wi-Fi and endpoints as part of onboarding. The scope is agreed during transition planning and depends on the equipment, systems and access available.
What if we do not have all our administrator passwords?
We will work through what is available and advise on the recovery options for each system. The available route depends on the platform, account ownership and the permissions your business can demonstrate.
Can J700 improve our cyber security during the transition?
The review phase can identify security gaps — whether in identity management, endpoint protection, email security or backup. We can then discuss priorities and agree which improvements belong in the transition plan.
How long does switching IT support provider normally take?
It depends on the complexity of your environment, the available documentation and the level of cooperation during handover. We assess those factors first, set expectations with you and agree a practical sequence rather than promising a fixed timescale.
